Henry San and She's Humble combine for 20/1 double at Plumpton

Two selections were given out to Redd Racing members today, and if you had put them together in a double you would have increased your stake twenty-fold. By all accounts, several of you did just that, so congratulations are in order.

At odds of 5/2 today's daily nap Henry San was the first leg of the double, coming home in the first race of the day at Plumpton, a two-mile novices hurdle. She's Humble was a ProSelect horse, and overturned the odds-on favourite later in the afternoon, in the handicap chase, at value odds of 5/1

Calgary Bay back on track after win in the VictorChandler Chase

Calgary Bay came good on the promise he showed as a novice when he won the VictorChandler.com Handicap Chase on New Years Day.

He also provided Redd Racing VIP Betting Club members with a great start to the new year, returned at odds of 8/1

Calgary Bay hasn't been in the winners enclosure since December 2009, and this was a welcome winner for trainer Henrietta Knight.

Now nine, Calgary Bay has struggled to live up to the promise he showed as a novice when he won a Grade 2, but the 8-1 shot was always travelling particularly well and jumped to the front two fences from hometo provide his trainer with only her fourth winner of the season.

Brilliant Big Buck's wins the Long Walk Hurdle

Members of the VIP Betting Club had a relatively quite weekend, at least when it comes to racing. If you're anything like me, you were given orders to get out and finish the Christmas shopping. I battled with the crowds in Milton Keynes, and finally arrived home at 6pm, exhausted! How about you?

Back to the racing, and the big crowd draw of the weekend was Big Buck's at Ascot. He was contesting the Long Walk Hurdle (Grade 1) and this year the race was named after a former winner, Lough Derg. The Paul Nicholls superstar was seeking an amazing fourteenth consecutive win, and interestingly enough, running at Ascot saw him racing right-handed for the very first time in all his 33 starts.

Big Buck's duly won of course, after 'toying' with Dynaste who had been setting the pace, and frankly seemed the only horse who might possibly give any trouble to Ruby Walsh and his mount.

His next race will be at the Festival in March when he contests the World Hurdle.

So for VIP members it was something of a smash-and-grab Saturday, with one race and one winner. However, returned at odds of 30/100 odds on, sadly we still can't afford that diamond necklace Christmas gift for the missus.

I shall be at Kempton on Boxing Day to watch what looks to be a cracking King George Chase.

It just remains for me to wish everybody a very happy Christmas.

Join Up wins quite cosily at 9/1

Members of the Daily Nap service enjoyed a win at a fairly decent price yesterday at Wolverhampton when the Mark Brisbourne trained Join Up won the class 6 handicap over the extended mile at odds of 9/1

Just a moderate handicap, but JOIN UP won quite cosily. He´d slipped to a good mark, 3lb lower than when last successful (over this C&D), and with the benefit of a run under his belt following a six-month absence he travelled smoothly into the lead before keeping on well to score with a bit in hand. That said, he doesn´t have the profile of a horse who is likely to follow up.

Tingle Creek review

My usual review of the weekend's racing with Redd Racing. I made a decision Friday afternoon I would make the trip down to Sandown on Saturday, as my daily nap was running in the novice hurdle, and VIP members had an interest in both the King Henry VIII novice chase and the Grade 1 Tingle Creek.

Knight Pass was the well fancied favourite in the 12:55 novice hurdle, but proved disappointing. Al Ferof scored in the King Henry VIII, and Sizing Europe proved too strong for Kauto Stone up the stiff Sandown finishing straight.

Approaching the last it was Sizing Europe’s race to lose but the 11-8 favourite was not to be denied a fourth Grade 1 win over fences and was once again foot perfect.

Overturn lands gamble in Fighting Fifth

Members of the Redd Racing VIP Betting Club were thrilled to see Overturn repel all his rivals, including the Champion Hurdler Binocular, with an all-the-way win in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle this afternoon at Newcastle.

Overturn became the first horse to add a win in Newcastle's big jump race to victory in the track's biggest Flat race when the Northumberland Plate winner of 2010 landed a huge plunge on course.

How to look after your piggy bank

Last week I decided to re-mortgage the house, I raided the savings account, withdrew everything from the childrens’ University Fund, then sold all my shares ….and then I lumped all the cash I had on the favourite in the 1:30 at Kempton Park.

Of course I’m kidding! That would have been bonkers, and practically inviting financial disaster.

Staking absolutely everything you have on just one horse is an example of bad money management. Granted, it’s an extreme example, but I reckon it got your attention, didn’t it?

Yet far too often your typical punter is guilty of poor money management. On a much lesser scale admittedly, but is it any wonder that in the long run the average punter loses money betting on horse racing?

I’m frequently asked by my readers “how much” they should put on each bet, and “do I have a staking system?”, or “how quickly can I give up my job and just bet on the horses?”.

It seems plenty of people like to pay lip service to managing their betting bank-roll, but it never ceases to amaze me how so many people are still acting so recklessly with their money when it comes to betting.

Best intentions

It strikes me that the perennial losing punter is a little like the over-weight bloke, who sets out on January 1st with every good intention of losing his beer gut.

He has a few salads, maybe even pays a visit to the gym. But more often than not come February he is back to his comfortable eating habits, and the weight continues to pile on.

And it will often be the same with the average punter – he has developed bad habits that have, over time, contributed to a steady flow of money out of his bank account and into the cash-till of his local bookmakers. To become a winning punter he must change his ways.

Over the course of the next few weeks I’m going to examine some of the bad betting habits that contribute to an unhealthy bank balance. But before the next instalment, I’d like to ask you a question… what would you say is your greatest weakness when it comes to losing money on the horses? Leave a comment below.

The 11-year-old bounced back to his brilliant best when defeating last season’s King George and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday, leaving Nicholls and Smith with the dilemma as to whether to run him in the race they have earmarked for stablemate Master Minded who also got back to winning ways at Ascot on Saturday.

Overturn profits as Oscar Whisky stumbles

Members of the Redd Racing VIP Betting Club were given just the one selection yesterday, to back Overturn in The Ascot Hurdle. They were rewarded with a 5/2 winner.

Many shrewd judges fancied Overturn to beat the favourite Oscar Whisky, but in the end it was an easy success for Donald McCain’s charge after the market leader tipped up at the last when challenging the winner, who was able to canter home from his trailing rivals.

Long Run will be hard to beat in Betfair Chase

Gold Cup champion is the one to beat in this afternoon's Betfair Chase at Haydock. Trainer Paul Nicholl's speaking on The Morning Line said,

On all known form he's the best horse in the race. He's a class horse and I think he will be very hard to beat.

Swift Chap lives up to his name

New members enjoying a week of free horse racing tips collected on a 11/1 winner yesterday at Wincanton as Swift Chap came home in the handicap hurdle over two and a half miles.

Darren O´Dwyer, assistant to Philip Hobbs, said,

The step up in trip has helped Swift Chap. He wouldn´t want the ground heavy and may have a break over the winter.

The race was a modest but competitive start to the meeting. The pace looked sound. Swift Chap finished in front of Calico Rose last time (extended 2 miles at Chepstow) when cheek-pieces were refitted, but was unproven at this distance and was weak in the market. However, he got himself into contention despite needing to be pushed along and ground out a pleasing success.

Trainer with a foot in both camps

Trainer and Queen's Counsel Graeme McPherson has been in the racing news quite a bit recently after being accused and fined for schooling a horse at Chepstow.

It's abhorrent to me that anyone could suggest I had been cheating in some way. I would not embarrass myself by cheating, or embarrass the BHA by cheating. I know the rules as well as any trainer and the importance of abiding by them as well as any trainer.

That was the week....

It's Friday again, and the end of an important week in the National Hunt calendar. The Grand Annual Chase has just finished, to bring the curtain down on another Cheltenham Festival. The highlight for me was to see Kauto Star reclaim his Gold Cup crown earlier today. I honestly did not think he would do it, and he made history by doing so, so one has to tip the old hat in respect. It was good to see Denman also back to form when finishing runner-up. Trainer of the week, obviously Paul Nicholls. And a record-breaking seven wins for Ruby Walsh puts him at the top of the jockey tree.

Daily members were given five bets to back at The Festival, and we enjoyed two winners in Wichita Lineman at 5/1 on Tuesday, and Chapoturgeon yesterday at 8/1

We didn't lay any horses at Cheltenham, which is par for the course as the races are typically very competitive and prices generally too high.

The VIP members had mixed results: on Tuesday we saw Celestial Halo finish 2nd in the Champion Hurdle by just a neck at 17/2 each way, followed on Wednesday by Petit Robin 3rd in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at 12/1 each way. Kasbah Bliss was a disappointing loser yesterday in the World Hurdle, and Star De Mohaison was the last of the finishers today in the Gold Cup.

HEATHCLIFF unbeaten in two starts since joining Richard Lee, is taken to overcome another hike in the weights as he still hasn't had many chances at this sort of trip in handicap company and should have more to offer. Not easy to pin down quite what Cause For Applause achieved when running away with a C&D seller on New Year's Day and preference is for PAINT SPLASH, who was very strong at the finish when taking what looked a stronger 7f seller last month and has more to offer over this trip. Shifting Gold is better than he showed here last time and it will be interesting to see if the market expects a more prominent finish with Jamie Spencer booked today.

Far too many "ifs and buts" to be confident about the outcome but if FINE BY ME is none the worse for his tumble a couple of months ago, he could prove the answer.

It may be worth giving another chance to ACORDEON, who has shown plenty of ability in two starts despite being a beaten favourite both times and who runs here in preference to a host of near-at-hand engagements over hurdles. It is a worry that NATURALLY INSPIRED disappointed on her only previous run on softish ground, but a lack of stamina over a longer trip might have been to blame and she's given the benefit of the doubt in a very poor race. Twilight Dawn is respected having at least won a race on the Flat, while given the quality of opposition any confidence behind Stormy Waters would be significant.

Look out for a better effort from Amir El Jabal, who ran much his best race over fences back from a break on last season's chasing debut when still in front when falling at the last in a Huntingdon handicap chase. However, preference is for LAHARNA, who won this year's renewal of that same Huntingdon race last time and, with a 6lb rise fair enough, will have very strong claims if reproducing that form in a lesser race here. Encouragingly, Laharna ran a good race in one previous run here too.

A handful of interesting runners, though couldn't be confident about the outcome with much depending on how the hurdles newcomers jump and how much improvement some of the lightly raced ones find. Psi and hurdles newcomers Ronaldo des Mottes and Gofannon are well worth considering but tentative preference is for SILK AFFAIR, quite decent on the Flat (including on soft) and who ran with some promise on last month's hurdles debut at Kempton.

It looks like there may be jumps racing from Kelso today, but unfortunately I still find nothing I fancy backing. On the all-weather surface at Lingfield the first race is a 5f handicap. NICKEL SILVER has strong claims to the race, having won recently at Wolverhampton. However, Lingfield is a different surface and he has never raced here before, and I think that the price is much too short to back the horse, in a sprint handicap. So the value is to oppose him.

Not surprisingly the going is heavy after a period of snow and frost. This race is a novice hurdle over 2m. SIGNALMAN is the forecast favourite and certainly has the form to win the race. However, he is giving away 7lbs to all his rivals, and that may prove too much in the testing ground, so I am going to oppose him.

This is a class 2 handicap hurdle over 2m. ISSAQUAH will be sent off the short priced favourite having won five of his seven starts. However, today he steps up in class, and is carrying an extra 13lbs since his last run. That is an awful lot of extra weight to carry in heavy going, and he will need to answer some big questions to win this afternoon.

This is a lowly class 6 seller over 1m 1f on the all-weather. AHLAWY has won only three times in thirty runs, and has not got his nose in front since the summer of 2007, yet he is favourite for this race. Admittedly he is dropped in grade to compete today, but I don't see this as a reason he should be favourite, and in my opinion the value lies in laying bets against him to lose.

This is a class 4 novice hurdle over 2m 6f. MOSCOW CATCH will be the favourite at around even money. Its been six days now since we had a jumps meeting because of the cold snap. Two more relatively low grade meetings on the all weather today, and I haven't been able to identify any opportunities to back a horse to win. But low grade racing often throws up good opportunities to lay horses to lose. This first race under the microscope is a class 5 maiden race over 1m 3f. Wing Diva is the forecast favourite but this morning MUSASHI is top of the market. He is still a maiden in his second season and after 8 races, and I don't see any reason why today will be his day.

This is a class 6 sprint handicap over 5f. HALAAK is the favourite for the race, but I am going to oppose him. He is strong in the market based on his comfortable win two runs ago. But that was a race for 2 year olds only and today he is mixing it with older and stronger horses. He also steps back to the shortest trip, and is unproven over this distance.

This is another sprint handicap, this time a class 5 affair. SILVANUS is a short priced favourite considering he has yet to win in handicap company. His only win to date was a maiden race, so he has only beaten horses that had never won themselves. He has good claims on this race, but the price is too short compared to his realistic chances of winning, so in my opinion the value lies in opposing him.

With the two National Hunt cards wiped out by the artic weather today, we are afforded entertainment by the all-weather meetings at Lingfield and Wolverhampton. The card at Wolves kicks off with a class 5 handicap over 6f for fillies only. This type of race is tends to produce surprises. It is low level fare, for fillies who can be unreliable at the best of times, and over a fairly short trip. In sprint races, any disadvantage from the draw, or a slow start, or getting boxed in, means the jockey has less time to regain the advantage. And so I am going to oppose the forecast favourite TRIPLE AXEL whose price seems a little short and offers better value to lay in my opinion.

Another low level handicap, again contested over 6f. FANTASY FIGHTER is priced at 2/1 which suggests he has a one-in-three chance of winning. However, I think there are five other horses with claims on this race, and so I rate the chance of Fantasy Fighter more like one-in-six and so he should be priced around 5/1 In which case, I prefer to lay him to lose as his price is too short compared to his actual chance of winning.

This time a class 6 selling race run over a mile distance. Golden Bishop is the forecast favourite, but also likely to be near the top of the betting is REDARSENE The horse has returned just one win in eleven starts, and the fact that he is entered in such a low level race suggests a lack of confidence. Although he has won in handicap company that was six months ago so I don't see why he should be such a short price, and I shall oppose him today.

She competed in a similar race earlier this month, and should have benefited from the run.

Bumper races are typically unreliable as betting heats, with little form history to draw upon. If you do decide to play, often it is useful to see how the market is shaping up before making any final decisions. Pepe Simo from the Paul Nicholls yard will probably be odds on favourite this afternoon, which is ridiculously short with so many unknowns in the field. Instead, I shall go for PIPE BANNER for a bit of value.

Snowy is likely to be sent off the favourite for this class 4 handicap chase over 3m. However, I think it may be worth siding with OH YAH DANCER from the Nicky Richards yard. He is well treated based on his hurdles form, and if he can take to fences he will be a contender at a decent price.

Despite only five runners this chase promises to be very competitive. Gone To Lunch will probably start as favourite, but I am going to look elsewhere in the field for the winner. Trigger The Light is tempting but I am going for MR POINTMENT He finished runner up in a class 1 chase recently, so I'm hoping he can take this class 2 race this afternoon.

This is a class 2 hurdle race over 2m. Dave's Dream will probably be the market choice but I am plumping for CHINA GOLD saddled by Alan King. He shaped well in a class 3 maiden race last time out, and although today's race represents a step up in class, Alan King knows how to ready his horses.

Newbury, 2:45
This is a Grade 1 novice hurdle over 2m 5f and looks to be between Diamond Harry and MASSASOIT The morning prices show the market is heavily in favour of Diamond Harry, and it looks like he will go off at odds on. I am going to take the resultant value as the price on Massasoit is pushed out.

This is a class 3 novices handicap chase over 2m 6f. The two that take my eye are Calusa Caldera and NORTH ISLAND and I shall nominate the latter because after winning his chasing debut he is well treated compared to his hurdle form.

Musselburgh, 3:30
This is a class 4 handicap hurdle over 2m. Kyber from the Jim Goldie yard will likely start as favourite, but I am looking further down the field at a horse called MASAFI saddled by Howard Johnson. He is dropping back in class today, and I think a race such as this is within his compass.

Silver Blondin is the forecast favourite for the bumper, but my preference is for CHAPOLIMOSS ridden by Robert Thornton. The price seems good value to me for a horse from a yard that knows how to produce horses for National Hunt Flat races.

Carlisle, 1:25 This is a handicap chase over 3m. Nelliedonethat is the likely favourite. He has yet to win over fences, and has been put up 3lbs since his latest run. I think the heavy going and the extra weight will prove too much for him. Verdict: Lay at 11/4 (3.75) Result: 2nd at 9/4JF

Carlisle, 1:55 Another handicap chase, this time over 3m 2f. Royal Mackintosh will probably be sent off the favourite. So far his winning form is a couple of class 4 chases in novice company, so a win today would represent a career best performance. I would be tempted to lay him to lose at a short enough price. Verdict: Lay at 6/4 (2.50) Result: Won at 13/8F

Carlisle, 2:25 This is another handicap chase, and this time for mares only. Rosie All Over will be a short priced favourite and considering she has not won in this level of company before, over hurdles nor fences, I think the value would be to oppose her. Verdict: Lay at evens (2.00) Result: Lost at 6/4F

Carlisle, 3:00 Deuteronomy contests this handicap chase over 2m 4f. He has the form in the book to win this kind of race so is worth a punt. Verdict: Back at 9/2 (5.50) Result: Lost at 7/2

Carlisle, 3:30 To conclude an afternoon of handicap chases, yet another handicap chase! Nicozetto won last time out, and can handle heavy going. I am a little concerned about the sharp trip, as he has been contesting races up at 3m of late. But he could prove good value. Verdict: Back at 6/1 (7.00) Result: Lost at 11/2

Another solid performance today, and just over 2 points profit to show for my efforts. My first selection didn't reach my advised price, so goes down as a 'no bet'. This was followed by a losing bet, but happily I finished the day with a winner at Southwell. You would be skint following Charles Parnell blindly, but he was back down to a winning mark today in a class 5 handicap. Today's race was particularly weak, and was never going to take a special horse to win, and at better than 3/1 I thought his price was representing good value. He followed up his recent second with a win today, and ensured I returned a profit for the day.

I'm definitely not Bleu

A good start to a new month, with both the back-to-win account, and the lay-to-lose account returning a profit. This morning I suggested three horses we should back, and two of them duly went on to win. First up was Don't Be Bleu at Folkestone. Making his chasing debut, he had three wins at this level over hurdles, so I felt a price of 2/1 was ample if he could only translate his hurdling ability to fences. It was a good choice as he came home the winner. This was followed up by SingleB winning at Wolverhampton.

I proposed just the one lay bet today, namely the race favourite Dayia in the 3:40 race. The horse lost, and presented me with another 4 points profit.

Hector the right Choice

The lay bets continue on smoking hot form, and I had a good return from the win bets as well today. I proposed three horses to back in the morning, the first two were unsuccessful, but then Hectors Choice lined up for the conditional jockeys handicap hurdle at Newbury. Trainer Philip Hobbs has a good winning record in this race, and this French horse showed promise in his first race in this country at Exeter last month. The early boards were offering 4/1 which I felt was good value, and I suggested getting on at 7/2 or better. It was a rewarding bet as the gelding came home in front.

My lay bets returned a juicy 17 points profit, despite my last selection winning at Great Leighs.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

An uninspiring day today, three bets losing, and three points profit lost. One of my suggested bets was to back Flake in a class 3 handicap chase at Wetherby. He has winning form over fences at this level, and so I saw his double figure price as particularly good value. However, he ended up the last horse to cross the finish line, I couldn't have been more wrong, and it was then clear why he was priced in double figures! Where did I put that crystal ball?

I did not propose any lay bets today.

Results from the last 7 days

I've produced four winners from nineteen Back-To-Win bets this past week, and just about broken even with a little over a single point profit. Not great, but treading water is still preferable to drowning.

The Lay Bets have continued to prove lucrative, and my six succesful lay bets from a total of nine have returned a fraction under 19 points profit.

Go, go Vogarth

A most satisfying day at the office today, with more than 30 points profit to stuff away in the satchel. The day started well at Southwell as I suggested backing Vogarth in the amateur riders handicap race over a mile. The gelding had showed promise recently finishing in runner up spot a couple of times in course and distance maidens. Although only a speculative punt to take victory, I felt that the 8/1 available this morning was much too high a price, and he was the value bet. Make this kind of bet consistently and over time you will win more than you give back. My other win bet came second at 16/1

To cement a fine day's work, all three of my lay bets lost, and at advised stakes returned another 25 ponts profit.

Monday horse racing summary

By contrast to last week when I had a day when every selection won, today all my selections lost. But just like last week this was good and bad news. The bad news this time was that all three of my back-to-win selections lost, and three points came off the account.

However, my two lay-to-lose selections also came a cropper, good news! I advised a maximum lay bet against Merrydown in the novices hurdle at Ayr. He won last time out, and also at this level, but today's race distance represented a marked drop back in trip. He was forecast to be odds on which given the question mark over the trip made it a no-brainer to lay. Laying at odds on meant we could leverage the stake, and when he finished only third we collected 12 points profit. My other lay bet also lost to give me a bonus 2 points.

11 points profit in total from my efforts today, so I'm a happy bunny.

Monday horse racing summary

A small profit was the result of my punting efforts this afternoon. I proposed three win bets and found a winner in Woolston Ferry at Wolverhampton. Earlier I had suggested backing Marleybow at Carlisle. Owner Graham Wylie clearly thought a lot of this horse when entering him in a couple of Grade 2 hurdle races earlier this year. This exercise ended in disappointment and Howard Johnson has now switched him to chases. Today was a class 3 novice chase event, and Howard Johnson enjoys particular success at this northern track, so I felt the price of 7/2 to 4/1 generally available was quite generous. The booking of Tony NcCoy to ride was also encouraging. But the horse did not improve from his chasing debut as one might expect, and it was not to be. He finished fourth some distance off the winner.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

A loss of 5 points from the account today, as all five of my win bets failed to score any returns. I was looking for a value bet against the long odds-on favourite Cosmea in the novice hurdle at Huntingdon. Kahsabelle was bringing some good French form on soft ground, and certainly her flat form was good enough to take a race of this class. So I took her as the best of the rest and at 10/1 I hoped she would relish her first race over hurdles. She did prove to have the beating of the rest of the field, but was unable to get the better of the favourite.

I did not propose any lay bets today.

Results from the last 7 days

I finished October with a best ever monthly profit figure of 140 points. This was due almost entirely to an outstanding performance from my Lay Bets of more than 100 points. Laying horses to lose is very often a profitable strategy when we move from the Flat season to the Jumps, and vice versa. Form is that bit more unreliable, and there are far more "talking horses" over-bet and presenting good value to oppose.

The strike rate has been poor for the Win Bets this past week. I have had twenty bets, yet only seen three winners. However, these three have returned 5 points profit, and included a 16/1 winner.

I've had eight lay bets this week, and seen six of these overturning the favourite. I took a big hit with a maximum bet at 5/2 which obviously put a sizeable dent in the account of 25 points, and as a result the Lay Bets lost 3 points overall this week.

For the time being I am happy to be basking in the (self-awarded) glory of my first 100 point month, and I hope to continue in the rich vein of form.

Tuesday horse racing summary

I took a big lay bet on the chin this afternoon, which left me with a loss overall to the account today of some 16 points. From the three win bets I proposed this morning, two of these managed runner-up spot, but obviously no pay out. The third did not reach my advised price, and so went down as a 'no bet'.

The lay bets started well this afternoon, and I landed a maximum bet against the odds-on favourite at Exeter According To Dick. But I also went to the maximum against Bally Conn in the stayers handicap hurdle. He was coming here off the back of a win by a narrow margin in a similar event, but had been raised by 7lbs since. I thought the handicapper may well just have got the horse pegged, especially carrying the extra weight around the undulating course at Exeter. In a 14 runner handicap 2/1 is a very skinny price and so it was a no-brainer to lay the horse to lose. On this occasion I was proven wrong as the horse won by a short head. But the backers will have had some sweaty palms I am sure. Nonetheless, the win put a big 25 point dent in my account as I was matched at 5/2

Sayonara Kerayasi

I can add another 13 points to the bottom line this evening, as two more successful lay bets brought home the bacon this afternoon. I had proposed three win bets this morning, but only one (Bynack Mhor at Plumpton) reached my suggested value price. He finished unplaced, so a loss of a point there.

But I managed to get two favourites beaten. First, Art Trend went down for a maximum 10 point bet. Then I advised bets against Kerayasi running at Plumpton. Before today, Kerayasi had just two wins to his name from twenty starts, both in low grade flat races. He had raced only twice over hurdles, both times at a lower grade than this afternoon. Today he was voted by the market the favourite to take a class 4 hurdle race - why? I laid bets against him for 4 points, and he finished in 6th position.

Rocket Rob fizzles out

I don't know how the weather has been where you live, but it's been a miserable day here in Tring, and the rain is still coming down on the glass roof of my office. A miserable day for the account today as well. I say "miserable" - I lost 2 points, which still leaves quite a bit to have to give back if we are not to see a record breaking month for October (see below).

Sadly all four of my Win Bets went down and this account is not performing as well as last month.

On the other hand, the Lay Bets are firing like a Formula One engine that has just come roaring out of the pits! I had just the one morning favourite to bet against today, and that was Rocket Rob running at Yarmouth. Had been raised 5lbs for his win over 6f at the beginning of September, so back up to 7f he was carrying a half stone more than his only other win at this distance. This morning he was trading at the 3/1 mark and I felt that was low enough to have a bet against him. I layed him for 2 points and he finished in mid-division. So a couple of points profit to offset against the four lost from the Win Bet account.

Monday horse racing summary

I managed a good net return of 7 points to add to the bottom line of the account today. I saw two horses from three come home in runners-up position. However, I'm afraid to say that unless the bookmakers are feeling particularly generous, they still do not pay out on second place round where I live! So three points down with my win bets.

My lay bets today produced much better returns. I proposed four horses to oppose, and three of these lost. Ghanaati was a short-priced favourite which justified its market position when winning at Kempton. On the other hand, I also suggested a maximum bet in opposition to Hallingdal, also to be seen at Kempton this afternoon. She had won over course and distance previously - a major excuse for punters to 'pile in' and for bookmakers to shorten the price. But her previous win was over a lower class of competition, and she has been raised in the weights since. So when I saw she was likely to be offered at a price representing a 33% chance of winning, I jumped at the chance of laying her heavily.

She finished with only two others behind her, and I bagged 10 points profit.

Monday horse racing summary

Not a good day at all, and I've given back a slice of this month's profits today. I proposed four win bets this morning, and all four lost. The blow of a losing day can often be softened with at least one winner to give you the confidence you are still doing something right. But that was not to be this afternoon.

I also suggested two horses to oppose. I felt the handicapper had Inchwood pegged after raising her mark by 8lbs for her win in a class 4 race. Since then she has contested two class 3 handicaps and not tested the winners. So today I was not expecting a win, and looked to lay bets against her at 4/1 or lower. When she opened on course at 5/2 I quickly laid her to lose for a 5 point stake, before she eased in the market to go off the 3/1F I was wrong to oppose the filly today, and she took nearly 14 pints out of the account. Since we have amassed over 100 points with the lay bets this month alone, I wasn't too disappointed. In fact, it was only a matter of time before a winner would put a dent in the accounts. My other lay bet was to oppose Thewhirlingdervish for 4 points. The horse was duly beaten so I managed to salvage a little back.

Saturday horse racing summary

A slight loss to the account today. I proposed four win bets this morning, and three of them lost. Poquelin produced a thrilling come back to win at Cheltenham, and I managed to recoup most if not all of the losses.

Poquelin has winning class 2 hurdle form, and had already won his chasing bow at Newton Abbot before today's race. So if he could live up to his hurdles ability then today's race was well within his compass, and I was looking for a price of 5/2 or better to make the reward worth the risk. He touched 11/4 leading up to the off, and I grabbed this before he was eventually sent off at 5/2 After a bad mistake at the water jump left him detached from the leaders and seemingly out of a chance, he showed great heart by powering up the Cheltenham hill to come past all his rivals.

No lay bets to report today.

All in against Laddies Poker Two

Please excuse the very weak pun. Half of me wanted to lay a decent bet against Laddies Poker Two, just to give me the excuse to post that lousy title. The other half recognised the fact that the only race this filly had won to date, without the help of the handicapper to even the field, was a class 5 maiden. Yet here she was this afternoon, lining up in a Listed race, and priced at 11/8F The value bet was clearly to oppose her, and I layed her for my maximum 10 points. She finished soundly beaten into sixth place and around 5 lengths shy of the winner in a 6f sprint.

I suffered a small loss on the Win Bet account. My first horse Run For The Hills came home the winner at 13/8 with 11/4 generally available this morning. However, the subsequent three bets all lost to leave me a little out of pocket.

But more than 9 points profit overall, and a solid day's work.

Thursday horse racing summary

I moved the account forward by more than 6 points today, thanks to a successful lay bet. I proposed three selections to win this morning, but it was two horses that reached my suggested value prices to be final bets. However, these both lost.

Big Bound was running his second race - a maiden at Nottingham. He was short priced due to a close finishing second on his debut. Expected to come on for the run, he was a red hot favourite to win today, especially with the booking of Frankie Dettori. But although he was the most likely to win, the price of 4/5 odds-on was still way too short compared with his real chance of winning. This is how bookmakers make their profits over time. Not all red hot favourites win, and by offering such ridiculously skinny prices, when they do win the bookmakers have a minimal pay out. The value was to lay the horse to lose, and that's what I did, and for a stake of 7 points. When the colt lost at an odds-on price of 4/5 my return was a profit of 8.75 points.

Quiet on the Set please

I moved the account forward by a single point today, having seen Film Set win at Newbury. He was contesting his second race, a class 4 maiden over 6f The colt came up short by just a head in his first outing a couple of weeks ago in a similar race, so I was looking for him to come on for that experience. I was somewhat concerned to see him drifting in the market, and I managed to get matched at 3/1 before the off. Happily the horse did not know the market was not confident in his ability, and Frankie drove him on to win.

My lay bet for the day was Orchard House at Wincanton. I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to oppose a red hot favourite, and suggested a maximum lay bet of 10 points. Just before sending out my advice message he was trading at a ridiculously short 8/11F but almost immediately started to lengthen. By the time the race started he was still favourite, but at a much more generous 11/8F He could only manage sixth place. I know a few of you managed to get matched early on at my recommended price of 8/11 but the majority of members missed out. For this reason the bet must go down as a 'no bet' and the 10 points will not appear on my results.

But it still demonstartes the form the Lay Bets are enjoying at the moment.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

Mixed results this afternoon. I had my eye on three outsiders at Exeter, Towcester, and Nottingham, all three at double figure prices, but they all failed without even a placing. I managed to end the day in front though, as Native City came home up the hill at Towcester at a respectable 4/1 He has been steadily improving all season, with more than his fair share of second places, so I felt he must be due his next win. I managed to get matched at 11/2 on Betfair which I considered to be his worth, and I was rewarded with a profitable bet.

No lay bets today.

Results from the last 7 days

Most savvy punters throttle back a little around this time of year, as we make the transition from Flat to Jumps. Form is a little less reliable so it's a wise move to make. I prefer, however, to be that bit more aggressive, take advantage of the unpredictability of racing at this time, and focus on my lay bets. This week in particular that approach has paid spectacular dividends!

I've had nine lay bets this week, and all nine horses have been beaten. All were either race favourites, or morning favourites. At my advised stakes these bets have returned a stupendous 56 points profit, so I guess we should now look out for a few winners to blow some of this profit out of the water! Call me a pessimist.

Good news also on the Win Bet account, where 21 bets returned 4 decent priced winners including one at 8/1 SP and a 6 point profit overall. Not as good as the Lay bets, but sometimes it's comforting to know you can rely on a steady profit. Big profits in a week has a scary side, because experience tells you to expect the 'darker' side to betting, where 'good things' finish second and 'no-hopers' win the race. Call me a pessimist (again).

For the time being we can enjoy the purple patch.

Sunday horse racing summary

A quiet day with just the two win bets proposed this morning. Both of these lost. Since being switched to hurdles Predictive had run exclusively at Uttoxeter, and I was looking for him to score his first win. It's easy to look back now and see his better runs have come on faster ground, but I would say he coped well with the soft going at the Midlands track today. However, the other joint favourite prevailed, and Predictive has proven an expensive horse to follow so far.

No lay bets to report on today.

Saturday horse racing summary

A bumper collection day today. Two winners from three win bets, and a very profitable lay bet, saw just over 20 points added to my bottom line. Morestead got things started at Fontwell, winning at 8/1, followed by Il Warrd finishing first at Redcar.

My only lay bet of the day was Liberation at Newmarket. His last run was a convincing win in a class 3 handicap worth £6,000. However, today he was stepping up in class to compete for a prize of £492,000 and facing much, much stiffer opposition. Mark Johnston's horses are in fine form at the moment, but I still felt that the price of 2/1 was too short about this colt. I went against him for 9 points profit, and he could finish only fourth.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

Mixed results this afternoon, as two of my four Win Bets came home in front to return more than 8 points profit. But with my Lay Bets I managed to trip over a couple of winners, and lost 7 points from the account. So if you follow my win bets only, you will be pleased as punch this evening. If you are a layer you will be licking your wounds. And if you follow my service completely then you will have bumped your account forward a point or two.

I was against Stevie Junior in the Nursery at Kempton this evening. The old favourite is to back the top weight in a nursery, but Stevie Junior had only a win in his maiden to his name, and today was racing in better company and giving weight away to all his competitiors. He was priced at very short odds-on so I was going to lay him to lose all day. I was proven wrong on this occasion, but this type of race is where layers make money in the long run.

Results from the last 7 days

It's been a tremendous finish to September, with 7 winners from 21 bets in the past week, with prices including 7/1, 14/1, and 9/1, and producing a whopping profit in excess of 32 points. The pessimist in me suggests now we have to anticipate the inevitable losing spell, but I'm enjoying the moment for the time being.

Not such good news with the Lay Bets. I have put up 7 Lay Bets, and been successful with four of them. However, those three winners cost me over 8 points profit in all

With th St Leger now behind us the Jumps season will soon be in full swing. The first major race The Racing Post Trophy takes place at the end of this month at Doncaster. The all-weather tracks will also start to provide us with more entertainment, and if the wet summer was anything to go by, and turf meetings find themselves waterlogged, I am sure there will be many days when opportunities to profit from betting will only come from racing on the sand. This winter we can look forward to a bit more all-weather variety, as Great Leighs is now on the fixture list.

September Results
It may be a cliche, but September really was a game of two halves. Half way through the month and the profit line was like a very weak swimmer - just about keeping his head above water! But then we hit a purple patch and by the end of the month the Win Bets had returned a monumental profit of 73 points. The strike rate was nothing much above normal at 26% but what made the difference was six winners at double-figure prices. 21 winners from 82 bets.

Profits for the Lay bets were disappointing, although still they were profits and not losses. However, we never got more than 10 points in front, and ended up with a little under 5 points to put in the satchel. 20 successful Lay Bets from 26.

I'm always grateful for having the Win Bets AND the Lay Bets, as it invariably seems that when one is under-performing, the other is bringing home the bacon.

Minus Fifteen frozen out of the race

It would be an exaggeration to say that there is absolutely nothing better than rounding off a winning month with a winning day, but it is definitely satisfying. And this afternoon I added another fat and juicy 10 points to the September account, and it has turned out to be one of my much better months.

I had four win bets lined up at Warwick today, and after Brandywell Boy finished runner-up at 13/2 my second selection Baariq won at 2/1 Next was Mith Hill which came 3rd but I finished off the month with a decent priced winner in Jawaab.

My sole lay bet selection today was Minus Fifteen, running on the all-weather at Southwell. He scored a win in a similar race earlier in the summer, but has since been raised 5lbs and seems to be held by the handicapper. This morning you could have taken bets against the horse at 10/3 So if you left the bet til this afternoon you might have missed what I felt was the value price to oppose him. Again Minus Fifteen finished fairly close up, but not close enough, and I collected on the bet.

Punching above his weight

Similar to yesterday, it was a relatively quiet afternoon again today. Two win bets, both of which lost, and no lay bets to report. Punching was running in a claimer at Brighton. He has obviously fallen some way from the form he showed back in July when running credibly in a class 3 handicap, but he had a race like today well within his compass and I felt he was value to take on the favourite. Easy to admit after the race that he is now competing in claiming races rather than class 3 handicaps for a reason, but hey, if we all had twenty twenty hindsight....

Sunday horse racing summary

A quiet day to finish the week end. Two bets, and alas two losers. I was very keen on Ajhar in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot. He had recently broken the course record on the all-weather track at Kempton, and trainer Marcus Tregoning has saddled the winner of this race four times in the last seven years. 13/2 was a decent enough price in my opinion, but he could only mangae a third placing.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

A cracking day at the office, with three winners from five bets, and a bumper-sized profit haul. Hearthstead Maison was our first success when he got up on the line at Goodwood to share the spoils at 9/1 He had Group race winning form under his belt from last year, and Mark Johnston's horses are in very good form at the moment. So I felt the 9/1 on offer was a little high and represented great value. I followed this up with Shimoni also at Goodwood at 8/1 and Diablo at Perth a short-priced hotpot.

Results from the last 7 days

Undoubtedly I shall be returning a healthy profit when September finishes next week. I will not go so far as to say this is surprising, as I have continued confidence in my methods and this is the attitude every punter should take when they encounter a losing spell, but considering the account was showing a loss mid-way through the month it is extremely gratifying.

This past week I have had 24 Win Bets and found 9 well-priced winners, including three at 10/1, 9/1, and 8/1 resectively at SP.

The Lay Bets account remains quite overall and showed a small loss during the week. I chalked up 7 successful lay bets from 9

Arachnaphobia!

I surrendered a couple of points profit this afternoon, with a pretty poor betting performance. All three of my proposed win bets lost. I scrambled a point back with my lay bets, but still managed to oppose one winner.

Red Spider was making his race course debut at Kempton this afternoon. There was a lot of money for this colt as his price shrunk from 10/11 to 8/13 The bookmakers were taking no chances but opposing the horse was the value bet. An odds on price to win about a horse that has never raced in public before, can rarely provide a worthwhile return. The risk of your stake versus the potential return is not value, so the best bet in the long run has to be to lay the horse (or obviously leave the race alone altogether!) On this occasion the horse justified the confidence of the market, but these types of bet are what keep the layers in business throughout the season.

Profits beached by Offshore Anna

I lost around two and a half points profits today, as I only managed one short-priced wnner, and a lay bet jumped up and bit me. This morning I proposed four Win Bets and it was only the last Knot In Wood at Hamilton which produced any returns. I grabbed some 6/5 on the exchanges before he was sent off a shade odds on by the bookmakers.

I had successfully layed two horses, when Offshore Anna was running in the last race of the afternoon at Hamilton, a handicap race over 11f. She had been raised 6lbs since her win around a week ago. I thought the soft ground as well as the penalty might just find her out, and I layed bets against her at 5/2 But I was proved wrong as she continued to improve and won by half a length, taking my two and a half points.

Take a look at That Look

Three very tasty winners in the last four days, and it's been a couple of weeks since I've been able to say that. A 10/1 winner on Monday, another at 8/1 yesterday, and That Look won at 10/1 today. The horse competes in class 3 company over the jumps, but was stepping down in class this afternoon at Yarmouth in a staying handicap over 2 miles. He was fit, having raced regularly over the summer. So the price of 10/1 represented very good value in my opinion, and I availed myself of 11/1 on Betfair. The field gave him a soft lead, and Chris Catlin made sure they never reeled him in. An enterprising ride if ever I saw one.

I gave a couple of points back as one of my lay bets Persian Sea won at Pontefract. But at the end of the afternoon my accounts were 8 points to the good.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

More than 5 points profit to stash away in the satchel today, as I enjoyed returns from the Win Bets and the Lay Bets. The day got off to a good start with Just The Lady winning at Beverley. She was returning to the track where she recorded has last win back in June. Today she was back to a more favourable mark and I was hoping for at least 4/1 to put my money behind her. She had not attracted much support during the day and her price continued to rise on course, going out to 7/1 by the off and with 8/1 freely available on the exchanges. She wasn't sweating up and looked fine going to post, so Iwasn't concerned, just happy to be getting better value. And she returned a comfortable winner by five lengths.

Priti Fabulous took all my profits from the other two successful lay bets, plus a little more, but it was a good day overall.

After a period well below par I seem to have turned the corner (he said desperately clutching his wooden desk top). I have had 27 win bets and found 5 well-priced winners, including one at 11/1 The strike rate could still do with some attention, but I am happy to be seeing the decent returns from value horses I have been lacking recently.

I have chalked up 7 successful lay bets from 9 and achieved a small profit to contribute to the bottom line.

All in all a very good week which saw the account move forward from a slight loss for the month, to a healthy profit in line with my typical returns.

No movement on the account today, as the two points staked on my two win bets were offset by two successful lay bets.

Red Fama was on course for his fourth straight win at Haydock this afternoon, which saw his price shrink to around 2/1 This in itself is a short price in any handicap race where supposedly every horse has an equal chance. But this afternoon Red Fama was carrying a penalty of 15lbs for his last win. He was also stepping up in class, and carrying that extra weight on the heavy going at Haydock. He had a lot of questions to answer and the value bet was to oppose him. He ran a very credible race to finish second, but this still meant we got paid. I also saw Lucayan Dancer overturned for a point at Lingfield earlier in the day.

Monday horse racing summary

A profit of 9 points to boost the bottom line today, thanks largely to a win by Errigal Lad at Leicester this afternoon. This horse has been slowly but surely improving throughout the season, and combined with the fact that he had dropped from a mark of 82 back in the Spring, I felt a win today was well within his compass. At a morning price of 10/1 he represented outstanding value in my book. The market appeared to be in agreement, as he opened on course at 8/1 before tumbling in price to 4/1 at the off.

I had two other horses finish in a place this afternoon, and I successfully laid a bet against Mythical Blue at Musselburgh. All in all, a most pleasing, and most welcome day.

A Pretty Bonnie bet

Not a good day overall, with a loss to the account of 4 points in all. Only one from six bets won, and I'm sorry to say this reflects my strike rate at the moment. Pretty Bonnie was contesting a class 4 sprint handicap at Sandown this afternoon. She is an improving filly, having finished 1st or 2nd in all but one of her last seven starts. I felt 7/2 represented a value price about her chances, and as it happens there was plenty of 4/1 available on the exchanges. She won by a head to spare my blushes today.

My only lay bet was Matterofact at Brighton. I was looking for 3/1 to lay bets against the horse, and as he dipped to 11/4 in the ten minutes before the off, I was matched at 3/1 He held on to win by a head, and took my 3 points.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

Back from my surprise trip to New York this was not the sparkling return I was hoping for. I proposed four win bets, but without any success.

Cooks Endeavour was running in a nursery at Doncaster off the back of his maiden win at the end of July. I felt he was fairly treated for his first outing in handicap company and the price of 17/2 was tempting. In hindsight a step up in class, and trip, and on soft going was probably too much to ask, and he finished third. But isn't hindsight a wonderful thing?

Results from the last 7 days

Only two days' results to report on this week, as for five days I was in the Big Apple enjoying my 40th birthday. What a place! If anyone is thinking of going at some point, it really is truly awesome. My recommendation is to go on the World Yacht Dinner Cruise to see the city skyline at night. Spectacular! Back to my results. The strike rate from my Win Bets this past week remains pathetic, with a single winner from six bets, and a resulting small loss.

During the past seven days I have not put up any Lay Bets.

And so, although the week showed just a small loss, and no real damage done to the account, the current form is concerning. It is something I am working hard to put right, and I am confident as ever that better results await around the corner.

OH... MY... GOSH !!!!!

It's my 40th birthday tomorrow, and my wife has just told me she has organised a surprise trip for us to go to New York for the week end! Can you believe it, I am so, so excited...

I am going to send out a message shortly to let everyone know there will be a temorary break in service, and there will be no daily messages until next Wednesday. But just in case anyone is concerned when no message is received over the next few days, and they decide to look here for an explanation, well now you know why.

Not much to add except, I will catch up with everyone again next week.... I cannot get rid of this big grin right across my face... :o)

A small loss to the account today, as whilst I did score a winner with Moville the returns did not quite cover the losses from my two other selections. Moville was running in quite a weak maiden at Goodwood, and as he had been racing with credit in defeat in his recent races, I felt this would his easiest opportunity to date to get off the mark. I also felt the cut in the ground today would suit him. Backed in to 6/4 at the off there was plenty of 7/4 available on the exchanges earlier this morning.

There were no lay bets to report on today, and so a loss of around a quarter point.

Monday horse racing summary

A good start to the month, with 3 points profit to put straight into the monthly account. None of these points came from my win bets however, as all three selections went down without a return.

On the other hand, I successfully overturned three of this morning's top of the market horses. I was of the opinion that the handicapper had finally caught up with Elite Land, who was running in a class 6 handicap at Hamilton. Carrying a 3lb penalty for his latest win, and stepping up in distance I felt he was worth taking on over good-to-soft going. As luck would have it, and as he only lost by a nose I have to give at least a little credit to Lady Luck, he found one horse too strong today. But a nose was enough for us to collect on the lay bet for 3 points. I also saw Miacarla beaten for 2 points, and Checklow at Kempton, to make it 6 points in all from the lay bets today.

Summer's over

Here in Hertfordshire the last day of summer has been one of heavy rain - torrential, pouring, heavy rain. Did we actually have a summer? Sadly, the last day of the month was also pretty gloomy for members of my service. I gave out three win bets this morning, and I saw no winners. But at least we were only giving back a little of the profits amassed during the course of the past thirty one days. Both the Back To Win and the Lay To Lose accounts still showed an overall profit for the month. Not huge profits, but profits all the same, and further details in the next Newsletter to go online soon.

He's The Gaffer shows who's boss

The account took a knock this afternoon, with a return from just one bet. He's The Gaffer won at Newton Abbott in a class 4 handicap hurdle. Having been placed in his last five races, in a grade above today's race, and at 31lbs well-in compared to his chase mark this afternoon, he was the obvious choice. But at the 2/1 available this morning I felt there was still value in the price.

This was my only success today, however, compounded by my sole lay bet, which won. But tomorrow will have to be a very poor day indeed, if I do not post another winning month overall.

Damn that Matt Bisogno! I can't believe he did this...

He's only gone and decided to virtually give away the full Trainer Track Stats 2008/9.

Here's the deal:

As part of a "one week only" special, Bisogno's giving away the full TTS manual (all 77 profit-soaked pages of it) for a measly one pound. A rotten stinking quid!

Maximum Impact

It doesn't get any better than scoring a clean sweep, and today we nailed three from three. The day started with Action Impact running at Lingfield. This gelding has shown good improvement, and consistent form, since arriving at Gary Moore's stable. I felt he had an equal chance of taking the race today as the eventual runner up, and should have been priced around 2/1 against Gracechurch and the rest of the field. Anything above 5/2 and it was a value bet. As it happened you could get 7/2 about him, and he came home in front. My other two selections also came in at 5/2 and 4/1

There were no Lay bets to report on, and so a very useful 10 points profit to stash away come the end of the afternoon.

If you did, you'll already have an idea of the hard core analysis that he and his co-researcher, Gavin Priestley, have put into it.

I have to say that, now I've seen what goes into this product, I'm pretty gobsmacked! I mean, I knew it was good because it's worked for me the last two seasons.

But I had no idea that they went to such 'atom-splitting' levels to unearth the kind of info that's just not available anywhere else.

The Magic Of Rio

I couldn't see the point of thinking up a pun for today's post title, because my winning horse's name is as good as anything I could dream up. A fine day at the office today, with a cash-injection of some 19 points to add to the account.

I proposed three win bets this morning, and the first of those Magic Of Rio won at Great Leighs. Returned at 7/1 there was plenty of 9/1 available on the exchanges throughout the day. The remaining two selections finished unplaced, but a welcome positive outcome overall, and much welcome.

Both my lay bets lost, including the red hot favourite Masaalek, also running this afternoon at Great Leighs. For sure, this colt had finished close up in a class 2 valuable handicap recently. But his only win to date has been his maiden, so remember that's a victory over horses who have yet to win themselves. And that was at class 5 level. So why he should be the odds on favourite in a conditions stakes was completely beyond me, and a no-brainer lay bet this morning. In fact, I was happy to lay 8 points against him if his price was 11/8 or below. Anything shorter than that, and the value was definitely in the lay bet. I was rubbing my hands when the price went below evens, and I layed him at 4/5 He was sent off at a miserly 4/6F by the bookmakers and finished third to give me 10 points profit in one race. My other lay bet was for a further 2 points against First Avenue at Chester.

Wednesday horse racing summary and weekly results

With the second day at York abandoned because the course is underwater (yes, underwater!) it was a quiet day again. I had one win bet Divine Power which came unstuck at Folkestone this evening.

My only proposed lay bet was running in the same race at Folkestone. Her only win aside, every other race she has contested this year she has been some distance off the winner. So I was not convinced she deserved to be the favourite for today's race, and if she dipped below 2/1 I felt the value bet was to oppose her. In the end she did justify favouritism, but I was right to insist on a maximum price as it meant we avoided taking a losing bet.

Results from the last 7 days

The strike rate from my Win Bets this past week has been pathetic, with only three winners from twenty bets. Those three winning bets however, returned enough to cover the losses and so no harm done to the account. But I would still seek to improve on the current hit rate to move the account forward.

No positive story with my Lay Bets either. I have had just the three lay bets this week, and two of these won their race, and so I ended up losing nearly 3 pts.

But I remain ahead overall for the month, with more than 6 points in the Bank.

You see, I've just had a look at a very interesting video by a guy called Matt Bisogno, author of TrainerTrackStats.

TrainerTrackStats is one of the best selling - and most consistently profitable - racing systems around, and Matt's just posted a video showing what's involved in pulling the manual together.

Tuesday horse racing summary

Slim pickings today as my focus was on the first day of the Ebor meeting at York which was rained off. York has also been washed out tomorrow as well. Two proposed bets remained, and the second of these did not reach my advised price. Which left Night Lily running at Brighton in a maiden. She showed improvement in her second race last time out, and a drop in class would seem to be the perfect opportunity for her to lose her maiden tag. The market agreed she had a favourite's chance, backing her in from 7/4 to 11/8 but it's a pity no-one told the filly she was going to win. She had a nightmare race, got bumped around and squeezed out mid-race, and finished last.

No lay bets to report either, so a loss of a point to the account.

Lady Deauville produces pretty profits

This week end proved to be a game of two halves. Yesterday all five of my selections came a cropper, whilst today my only win bet scored nicely, and my sole lay selection duly lost. And so by this evening I had recouped almost all of yesterdays losses.

Lady Deauville was appearing in the Listed fillies stakes at Bath this afternoon. She was a winner as a 2 year old at this level last year, and was coming off the back of a recent win in Listed company at Salisbury four days ago. The filly is clearly firing on all cylinders and I thought 3/1 about her represented a very good value bet. She won by a clear 2 lengths.

I was brave enough to oppose an AP McCoy horse as well today, and Gun Smith failed to fire at Southwell.
