Tuesday racing summary

Opportunities were scarcer than hens' teeth today. I only put up three potential bets. Both my proposed win bets came up short on price, and so go down as 'no bets'.

Which left my lay bet on Louviere at Newbury. The filly was running in a maiden, having a single race under her belt already. Today was over a longer trip, and on soft ground compared to good-to-firm first time out. With these two unponderables I was prepared to lay her for 2 points if I could get matched at 10/3 or lower. With a subsequent non-runner reducing the field to just six runners, I must admit to feeling a little anxious. But again I proved that by having the odds in your favour you will come out in front more often than going behind, and Louviere went down by a neck. A neck was enough however, to give me 2 points profit.

Betting on football with Socabet

I know that many of the seasoned punters amongst you will treat your betting activities much like those of an investor. You see the money you stake on a day-to-day basis as money ‘invested’ in the betting markets, rather than money 'gambled' with. Your prime objective is to achieve a profitable return from the funds you put ‘at risk’ when you bet, rather than purely adding to the excitement of a sporting event by having a little wager on the outcome.

I have heard it said many times that playing the stock market and investing in shares is “betting with a suit on” and in many ways this is absolutely true.

When you buy shares in a company you are using your judgement that the price of the shares will rise in the future, and you can sell to realise a profit. But you don’t know 100% that this will happen, and so there is inherent risk involved. You can see the obvious parallels with betting on horse racing.

A professional gambler will have several systems, tipsters, methods, strategies, etc assembled as a ‘portfolio’. Much like a typical investment fund the risk is spread across a number of investments. If one particular system is not performing this month, then perhaps the tipster is enjoying a purple patch. Overall, a good portfolio of betting strategies will yield a consistent profit month after month.

This brings me to a system I have been following recently, which focuses on betting on football. I am a keen football fan. I won’t tell you who I follow for fear of alienating most of my membership ;o) -- suffice it to say I have been a fan since they lost the FA Cup Final in 1976. My Dad said that May afternoon “Who are you going to shout for then?” and with a name like Redd, it wasn’t a difficult choice!

Although I love watching football, I couldn’t say I was an expert on betting on the sport. So when Socabet was voted the best non-horse racing product in my Readers Poll I thought it might be interesting to add this system to my betting portfolio, at least on probation as it were.

So far I am extremely happy with the results. Steven’s book reveals some methods and strategies that really give you an edge, and I have been profiting -- albeit only with relatively small stakes -- since my very first session. The system is covered by a generous 80 day satisfaction guarantee, so you can buy with confidence.

I’ve been in possession of Steven’s eBook since before xmas and I am most definitely more than satisfied!

If you want to add a new angle to your betting portfolio, or a fresh revenue stream, or you are like me curious to see if you can profit from betting on another sport, then order your copy of Socabet today.

Royal Ascot Champion Tipster Competition - Final Placings

DAY FIVE is sponsored by SportsWorld Publishing

A really close and thrilling finish, but jc_god stayed on the best of the four runners leading at the furlong pole, to win the race by a short head. Congratulations!

Well done also to the runners up vonny and N Harrison who picked up the prizes for 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

I hope everyone had fun by taking part, and my hat goes off to all contestants, as you showed you have the bottle to put your money where your mouth is - many who had the opportunity obviously didn't have the stomach for it.

We have some spot prizes to award, and full results will be displayed in my next newsletter which comes out early in July.

Wednesday racing summary

Another very quiet day, and only two bets. The good news is that both of them were winners! First Ballyboley came home in front at Worcester and the 7/4 was not to be sniffed at.

Second, I got US Ranger beaten, one of the hot favourites of the day at Ascot. He went off the 6/5 favourite for the Jersey Stakes. This race would have been his biggest win to date by far, and I felt 6/5 was so short it was a bet just crying out to be layed, and I went against him for 3 points. Thankfully it was the right decision lay the bets, and he found Tariq better on the day.

Not far off 5 points profit from the two bets.

Tuesday racing summary

Not a good start to my Ascot campaign. I had two bets at the Royal meeting, and both finished unplaced. Neither of my two lay bets could be matched at a low enough price, so at least I kept my powder dry here. A loss of two points on the day.

Portal opens the door to profit

A relatively quiet day, with only three bets, but with two of these producing returns it was also a profitable day. Lord Lington was my only win bet of the day. He won at 7/2 but you could have taken prices up to 5/1 on the exchanges.

I went against two horses this evening, at Windsor and Warwick respectively. Rocking won at Windsor and cost me a couple of points, but I successfully layed bets against Portal running at Warwick. He was stepping up in trip and racing on soft going for the first time. With these unproven factors I was happy to lay him for three points, and indeed he was pulled up after failing to handle the ground.

A wholly satisfactory 6 points profit for a day's work.

Sunday racing summary and weekly results

A relatively quiet end to the week, and sadly two losing bets today. Holbeck Ghyll managed only third, whilst my lay bet Archived won at Folkestone.

An excellent week in all however, for the Win Bet account, and I would hope to be bouncing back to some kind of form (grabs the nearest wooden object!) I have found a few more winners than of late, including Don Pasquale at a generous 12/1

The Lay Bets account also turned in a steady performance, with just under 6 points profit. I still feel a bit like a cold engine in winter when it comes to laying horses at the moment. I splutter into life every now and then, but then lose momentum. Cannot seem to get going, and I can't put my finger on it.

Profit for the week:- Win Bets 18.5 pts, Lay Bets 5.5 pts

Saturday racing summary

A point lost to the win bets, but a good day for my lay bets. I put up four selections to win, but only scored one winner in Black Rock. The market had two horses against the field, but had Spring City as the 4/6 odds-on favourite. Black Rock was to me the obvious value in the race, as I felt they had an equal chance of winning. Prices up to 2/1 have been available from this morning onwards on the exchanges.

Two from two with my lay bets. First up, Partners In Jazz was running in a class 2 handicap at Sandown. He has won recently at this level, but has since struggled with the 5lb pull given by the handicapper. Still on this mark of 99 and with the stiff uphill finish at Sandown to cope with, I didn't think today would see him returning to the winners enclosure, and I layed him for four points. I followed up with a bet against Kingscape, who duly lost at Leicester this evening for an extra point profit.

So at the end of a showery Saturday, the account had moved forward to the tune of 4 points.

Kilcannon reigns Supreme

The account will show a loss the best part of 2 points today. I had two win bets and scored a winner with Kilcannon Supreme at 13/8.

However, I suffered an unsuccessful lay bet against Squadron in the maiden handicap at Goodwood this evening. He was running off his highest mark to date, and with no winning form, I felt comfortable to lay bets if I could get matched at 5/2. He remains a progressive young horse, and stayed on well to win by a neck.

Credit gives them all the Slip

Two unsuccessful bets today, and a 5.5 point loss on the account. My win bet was Rockfield Tiger who finished unplaced in a Newbury maiden at 11/2

My lay bet was Credit Slip running in the class 5 handicap at Yarmouth. The horse was stepping up in class and raised 3lbs for his latest effort when beaten, so he would need to improve to a career best performance to win today. He was sent off the 9/4F and won in due course, albeit by only a neck. A neck was enough though, and the colt cost me nearly 4.5 points profit.

Read, Invest, and Win Professional Laying System

I recently posted an article about how to spot a vulnerable favourite. By coincidence, I have just finished reviewing an eBook which reveals a strategy to lay favourites for profit.

Read, Invest, and Win is a purpose-developed system for laying favourites only and can be implemented all-year round on the turf, the all-weather, and over the jumps.

Martin Cowlishaw’s methods immediately struck me as unique, because he does not rely upon pure form analysis alone to arrive at his selections. Let’s face it, you must have an edge to make a profit in this game, and that invariably means taking a different approach.

The author has found certain statistical angles which have resulted in a profitable and PROVEN system. Without giving away any of Martin’s secrets, he examines not only some of the more obvious aspects of a horse’s form, but also areas that certainly I have never considered before, including the physical make up of a horse.

The methodology is simple to follow, and the book itself is laid out very clearly. You will not find any convaluted rules, so selections are definite.

Ultimately the Read, Invest, and Win system gets my strongest approval because the whole system is under-pinned by a requirement that any selection will only qualify as a bet if specific price rules are satisfied. And anyone who has been following my advice for any length of time will be more than aware of how often I preach about getting VALUE.

The eBook is covered by a risk-free satisfaction guarantee so you can buy with confidence.

Rivals in Trivia pursuit

A very productive day which returned 17 points profit. I put up ten potential selections to win, but following two losers and several 'no bets' I had to wait until my final two selections to see returns. First Trivia won with a starting price of 15/8 before Don Pasquale scored at 8/1 with plenty of value to be found on the exchanges with prices up to 12/1

Both my lay bets lost, including Lady Gloria who I took for 4 points. Double Bill was the morning favourite for the 6f handicap at Kempton. The colt was competing in handicap company for the first time, and giving weight to all his rivals bar one. Having won his maiden a month ago, he was now stepping up in class. I grabbed some of the earlier prices around 7/4 before the money came for Royal Rock and the market lost confidence in our selection. He finished fourth and I collected an extra 2 points profit, and 6 points in all on the Lay Bets account.

Tuesday racing summary

Value was in short supply this afternoon, and only one of my selections was a final bet.

Appleby was the morning favourite for the class 4 maiden at Salisbury. This was the filly's third race, and today she was stepping up in class, so I was happy to lay her for a couple of points if I could get matched below 13/8 I managed to secure a bet at 5/4 before she drifted in the market to be sent off at 5/2 and she finished fifth.

So I was grateful for a 2 point improvement on the account from this one bet.

Monte is a Major success

I achieved almost 10 points profit today, with two winners from three selections on the Win bets account. First Monte Major scored at Wolverhampton and just a quarter-hour later Its The Limit came home in front at Newton Abbott.

I managed a small profit from three lay bets today. I suspected Classi Maureen would win her hurdles race at Newton Abbott if her chase form was anything to go by. However, there remained a couple of doubts in my mind - largely whether she could shoulder this weight in this company. It would be a lifetime best hurdles performance if she were to win, however, if she continued with her current rate of improvement, she would have the beating of her rivals. But I still thought that even money was too short a price and was actually a value bet to lay. She proved me wrong and took me for just over a point profit as I laid her at 11/10 My two other successful lay bets, including Bookieindexboy for 2 points, ensured I made back this loss, with a little on top to boot.

Sunday racing summary and weekly results

I suffered a small loss to the Lay Bets account today, but the Win Bets ensured I came home with more money in my pocket than I set out with. I had three win bets, and the one winner in Tender The Great at Bath. This horse was backed right into 4/1 at the off, but you could have mopped up plenty of better prices up to 7/1 on the exchanges.

One of my two lay bets was Private Peachey contesting a low grade handicap at Bath. His one and only prior win was at this level, but today he was running with an extra 11lbs on his back, so I felt it would be a big ask for him to win. He justified the 6/4F price, won the race, and proved me wrong on this occasion. I retrieved a point when Missgoodytwoshoes lost at Perth, but I was still a little behind on the day.

Over 4 points profit made today all told.

An average week for the Win account with a fraction over 6 points profit, but a loss of nearly 3 points for the Lay account. Bets against favourites have been thin on the ground and I only went ahead with four bets over the course of seven days. To my displeasure two of these won their races, and hence the poor results.

Profit for the week - Win Bets: 6pts; Lay Bets: 3pts loss

King Of Argos shows he has a lot in store

Three losing win bets this afternoon, but I clawed most of these losses back when my last selection Seeking Star got his nose in front at Windsor. You could get 2/1 on Betfair during the afternoon, but he was eventually backed right down to 11/10 at the start.

My lay bet of the day was King Of Argos in the class 2 handicap at Goodwood. He had stepped up to class 2 from class 4 on his previous outing and finished a dismal 31 lengths behind the winner. Running off the same Official Rating today he would have to show a marked improvement to win. I laid him at 3/1 and he went off the 5/2F You could argue that having the magic Mr Dettori on board made all the difference - I just know he cost me 3 points profit when he won by a short head.

Overall a 4 point loss on the account.

Friday racing summary

The markets failed to move far enough in the direction I was hoping today, and only one from six selections became a final bet. Padlocked turned in a disappointing performance at Goodwood, but only one point lost and no real damage done to the account.

Key Tips For All-Weather Horse Racing

There are currently four all-weather tracks in the UK, with a further course in development in Essex. This year there will be £5million in prize money on offer for the all-weather season, so racing promises to be the most competitive and exciting yet. In this article I will take you around the venues, and reveal my key tips and advice for making a killing when betting on horse racing on the sand.

All-weather racing often receives the same response from horse racing fans as Marmite gets from lovers of toast – you either love it, or you hate it!

Admittedly, the opportunity to watch low-grade horses running on the sand at a February meeting at Southwell may not have the same allure as the Gold Cup on Ladies Day at Ascot in the height of summer. But that is no reason for all-weather snobbery. In fact, the UK all-weather racing scene is going from strength to strength. And this is good news, hopefully, for punters who endeavour to grind out a profit betting on races run “on the beach”.

The four venues in the UK that currently stage all-weather flat racing are Lingfield Park in Surrey, Wolverhampton in the Midlands, Kempton Park near Heathrow, and Southwell in Nottinghamshire. However, this year that list will be boosted to five because a new track is opening at Great Leighs in Essex.

Forget the forecast

The all-weather horse racing championship kicks into gear just as the traditional flat racing turf season comes to a close in the autumn. The all-weather season gets under way in November and culminates in a grand finale at Lingfield Park in March with the running of the Winter Derby. With around £5 million in prize money, jockeys’ and trainers’ championships up for grabs, and opportunities for horses of varying levels of ability, this season has been the most competitive ever staged in the UK.

So which jockeys, horses and trainers should we be following on the all-weather, and how can racing at one artificial track differ compared with that at another? Hopefully, if you follow this abbreviated guide you will soon be on course to make some serious dosh from the sand!

It may boast a catch-all monicker, but all-weather racing actually differs slightly at each of the four venues which currently stage the sport in the UK. This is a factor well worth being aware of before you decide to have a bet at a particular track. With the exception of Kempton, the courses are left-handed. Racing at Wolverhampton and Southwell takes place around lozenge-shaped tracks, while Lingfield’s configuration is more triangular. I will expand upon the significance of this a bit further on.

One fundamental point you need to get to grips with early on is how the actual racing surface differs from one course to another. Two types of sand are currently used. All-weather races held at both Wolverhampton and Lingfield are now run on a material called Polytrack, which is a kind of rubberised sand which minimises the impact of ‘kickback’ – the effect the horses produce as they thunder over a loose-topped sandy surface. Polytrack’s consistent nature means that most races can be run at a good pace, so when having a bet at Lingfield or Wolverhampton it’s worth remembering the importance of backing a horse which will see out the trip.

With that in mind, it would be less of a concern for a horse with good form over 12 furlongs at these two courses to get stepped down to race, say, over 10 furlongs. But it may be more of a problem for a horse which has been doing well over, say, 6 furlongs if its next challenge was to run over a mile or further.

Horses for courses

However, a different racing material known as Fibresand is employed at Southwell. Generally speaking, this produces a more demanding surface compared with Polytrack. If all-weather racing at Wolverhampton and Lingfield is similar to running on the equivalent of fast going on turf, then Southwell’s Fibresand is closer to a turf equivalent of racing on soft or even heavy ground.

Take note of this factor when a horse which has performed well at Wolverhampton or Lingfield is then asked to contest a race at Southwell – even if the distance is the same. Before having a bet in this instance, you should be happy the horse will see out the trip on this different surface.
Lingfield’s sharp contours and relatively short finishing straight mean it tends to favour horses who can race up with the pace (or ‘handily’) rather than long-striding gallopers who need time to wind up their run. The layout of the track means that horses drawn in double figures tend to be at a disadvantage for races run up to a mile. Low-drawn horses who can race handily should enjoy a definite advantage when it comes to sprint races over the minimum trip of 5 furlongs.

It’s a similar story at Wolverhampton. Once again, horses drawn low in 5 and 6-furlong races usually have an advantage. It’s difficult for horses to swing wide into the straight without compromising their chances. But for race distances over a mile or more the impact of the draw diminishes rapidly.

We’ve already heard that the racing surface at Southwell is different to the other tracks and this means the kickback is far more pronounced here than elsewhere. The next time you go to the beach, get someone to throw handfuls of sand in your face and see how much you like it! For that reason, Southwell tends to benefit horses who can race ‘prominently’ or who are described as ‘strong travellers’ because they will avoid as much kickback as possible.

Sticking to these guidelines for all-weather betting should help you take a little more cash from the bookies’ satchels than the average punter. Happy punting!

Katie Boo surprises her rivals

A brighter day today and with it came some much needed returns. I backed five horses to win, and two returned as winners at healthy prices. Katie Boo running at Hamilton had been attracting some support and was sent off at 7/1, but 11/1 was freely available during the morning on the exchanges.

Running later in the day also at Hamilton was Magic Moth. I had gotten word of a plunge on this horse, and I was going to start laying bets around the 7/4 mark as I felt it was a weak selection. But the gamble never came, and the horse was actually returned at 11/2 so this goes down as a 'no bet'.

Despite this bet failing to materialise, I still managed a 11 point shift forward on the account today.

Wednesday racing summary

Three losing win bets today, and one successful lay bet.

Arabian Treasure was the morning favourite for the class 4 handicap at Nottingham over a mile. She was stepping back up to this class after a recently breaking her maiden, and this time she would also be racing in handicap company. I felt this would be a stiff task for her and she came in fourth. A point back in my favour at least.

Tuesday racing summary

I had two from three finish in the frame today, but none walking into the winners enclosure, and so a three point loss to the account.

Tetouan was running in the class 4 handicap at Ripon. I figured a number of potential negatives against this horse - he was again stepping up in trip, he had yet to win at this level, and he was racing off his highest mark to date. To win today would have needed a career best run. Unfortunately his price did not fall to around 13/8 that I was looking for, and so I didn't lay any bets. He finished a close second.

Monday racing summary

A loss of two points on the account today. I backed two horses to win, both at around 6/1 but neither finished in the frame.

My only lay bet was Ancient Culture in the class 4 maiden at Leicester. This was to be the colt's third race. Having tried twice at 10f he was stepping up a further 2 furlongs, and the ground was soft today to make the trip that bit more testing. Unproven at this distance I was happy to lay him, particularly as I felt his price would shorten as a Sir Michael Stoute-trained horse. However, the price did not come down as low as I wanted, and so although he lost, it must go down as a 'no bet'.

Sunday racing summary and weekly results

After yesterday's profit bonanza this week fizzled out with a couple of losing win bets, and a further small loss to the lay bet account.

My first lay bet of the day was Country Affair in the novice hurdle at Herefor. He was still a maiden after 7 runs, and only one race under this code. In his first attempt over hurdles he raced in similar company to today's race, and over the same distance, and he finished third. I had no reason to believe today was going to herald his first ever win in any race. His price I suspect was over-bet with the booking of Tony McCoy as jockey, so he was a good value bet to lay, and again he finished third. I had two further successful lay bets, but still ended up behind as I hit upon Takitwo at Brighton for 2 points. His win at a little over 2/1 cost me more than 4 points.

Overall a loss of a fraction over 3.5 points to the account.

The past week has been truly under par, with a distinct lack of successful bets. Having said that I did manage to keep the account on an even keel courtesy of Commemoration Day at 16/1

But this is not how I like to produce my profits. I much prefer a steady stream of well-priced winners giving a consistent return. These are what I shall be looking to unearth this coming week.

Profit for the week - Win Bets: 1pt, Lay Bets: 0.5pts

A Day to remember

I am so, so glad I got one of my lay bets wrong today! I was facing a real guilty conflict this afternoon - on one side I was willing Frankie to win his first Derby, but on the other hand I was suggesting opposing Authorized if his price fell below 10/11 odds-on. I really wasn't going to relish the prospect of betting against one of my sporting heroes.

Thankfully the best you could lay the favourite throughout the day was evens, and I could watch the race unfold without pressure. I suggested Authorized as a potentially good value lay, as he was stepping up in distance, over a course that is notoriously difficult to handle. The uphill start, then sweeping down to Tattenham Corner, and the adverse camber in the finishing straight, have all been the undoing of many a fine horse running here at Epsom. I was prepared to bet against him below 10/11 on the off-chance he would have an 'off' day. But today he was superlative! And well done Frankie!

My other two lay bets were successfully overturned for 3 points profit. And I had a sorely welcome day backing winners too. Two winners at Worcester, including Commemoration Day at 12/1 contributed to a haul of more than 16 points profit.

At the end of a memorable Derby Day I had managed to shovel back just under 20 points of profit back into the loss-hole I've created this past week or so.

Friday racing summary

Summer is here officially, but another really gloomy day in the Redd household. Another five losing bets, and it would seem that a horse having my name on it is like a 'kiss of death' at the moment.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow and the Derby. One of my sporting heroes Frankie Dettori takes the mount on Authorized and is favourite to win the only Classic that has so far eluded him. I don't think he will be worth backing, because he will doubtless be the big punters favourite, with everybody piling on and depressing the price. I would not at all be surprised if he goes off at a price odds-on - it would be a silly price, but hopefully the horse will not be aware that many hopes are pinned on him. One thing's for sure, I will not be tipping him to win. With my luck at the moment, I would not want to be in any way held responsible for a fifteenth unsuccessful attempt by Frankie.

God's speed Gianfranco!
