Laying horses at odds-on prices

As I have received a few queries recently, I thought it may be valuable to clarify my personal staking strategy when laying bets against horses at prices odd-on.

If a horse is priced odds-on, for example 10/11, 4/5, 3/10, etc., then your liability should the horse win is always lower than your stake.

Some people prefer to keep their stake the same and reduce their liability. So if (for example) they lay a horse for 1 point at odds 1/2 they will win 1 point if the horse loses, but only lose a half point if the horse wins.

Personally, I prefer to take advantage of a lower price, and increase my stake. So, again using the price of 1/2 as an example, I prefer to stake 2 points but risk the full 1 point should the horse win.

On Tuesday I recommended laying Haldibari for 3 points at a price of 2/5

I staked 7.5 points at the price of 1.40 (2/5), which meant I was still risking the 3 points suggested should the horse win.

Many people would have felt more comfortable laying the 3 points, but only risking 1.2 points. At the end of the day you should adopt a staking strategy with which you feel comfortable.

My approach is more aggressive, with higher potential profits, but equally you must accept the higher liabilities.

On 21st January I layed Dave's Dream at odds-on for 7 points, and it won. You will note that in this case I took the loss at the full 7 points. So it works both ways. Your staking strategy should always match your betting temperament.

Wednesday horse racing summary

An awful day where I almost drew a complete blank, save for one successful lay bet. Six losing win bets all went down, and although I successfully layed Sou'wester to lose at Exeter, Mylord Collonges popped up to win against my better judgement.

Mylord Collonges recorded his first win for almost 3 years on his last outing, in a class 5 handicap chase. Today he was stepping up in class, and carrying an extra 7lbs. I was happy to bet against him given his lack of winning form overall, and the tougher competition today, plus the weight penalty. But he justified favouritism and proved me wrong to win.

Think I'll go and boil my head!

Tuesday horse racing summary

Nothing to report from yesterday as I uncovered nothing of value in my opinion, but I returned a profit of just over 7 points this afternoon, due to a successful bet against a red hot favourite. I had just the one win bet, but Atacama Star was a runner-up at Folkestone.

My big lay bet was against Haldibari at Taunton. He was still a maiden after five races yet was on offer at 2/5 odds-on. This was a stupidly short price about a horse with no winning form, yet the mug punters were willing to take the layers' money. I wanted to risk 3 points so I layed a stake of 7.5 points, and the horse came in fourth.

I had another successful lay bet, and made 7.5 points profit overall for the afternoon.

Sunday horse racing summary and weekly results

No lay bets to report, but three back-to-win bets this afternoon, and Schinken Otto came home a winner at 4/1 to give me a decent profit.

The Win Bet account returned only a small profit this week, largely due to just five winners from twenty bets. But a small profit is preferred over any loss. However, a poor performance from my Lay Bets meant I produced a loss overall for the week. I successfully layed seven out of ten horses, but two of the unsuccessful bets were both layed to lose 7 points, and so I ended up 7 points behind. A loss to the account overall to the tune of more than 4 points.

Profit for the week:

Win bets: +2.5pts, Lay bets -7pts loss

Saturday horse racing summary

Inglis Drever's victory meant I made a small profit from backing horses to win. However, I went after Aigle D'Or in a big way to lose, and I came a cropper to the tune of 7 points.

Aigle D'Or ran only his first hurdle race recently, in a class 4 event, and that after more than a year away from a race course. This afternoon he was to line up in a class 1 graded hurdle, at one of the toughest courses in Britain, namely Cheltenham. With little form to read, and with such a big step up in class, I felt there were too many imponderables for the horse to be positioned as the favourite, and I layed bets against him for 4 points. I was proven wrong, and he won his race, costing me 7 points in the process.

A loss of just over 6 points to the account overall this afternoon.

Friday horse racing summary

My four win bets all went begging this afternoon, although I did manage to snatch a couple of points back by successfully laying Pride of Dulcote at Newbury. This was to be only his second race, after finishing close up in a bumper on his race course debut. Today he would not only be jumping obstacles for the first time in public, but also stepping up in class and this time venturing out onto soft ground. He was the morning favourite, the price artificially low doubtless because of the trainer/jockey combination. I went against him for 2 points, and sure enough he wasn't jumping fluently when he unshipped Ruby Walsh.

Hurrah for Hora

My account slipped back by more than 4 points today, and my winner Hora at Southwell was about the only bright spot in the day. I had four back-to-win bets, with Hora winning at a matched price of 15/8

I went against Classic Fiddle in the beginners chase at Fontwell. When I saw the horse was trading at odds-on I saw this was a good opportunity to lay. The horse had won at this level of competition in both bumpers on the flat, and over hurdles. But today would see his biggest test to date as he tackled the large fences for the first time in public. The trainer/jockey combination of Henderson and Fitzgerald will have helped shorten the price in favour of the layers. Eventually the horse was backed in to 8/11F but I managed to lay at just a little higher at even money. Today the horse justified the short price and favouritism and won the race, but these are still good laying opportunities to make profit long term.

Georgie The Third

A successful 'double whammy' this evening rounded off a nicely profitable day's punting. I had four win bets and found two winners, and added to this with two successful lay bets.

In the maiden race over 7f at Kempton this evening I was not convinced of the chances of Georgie The Fourth. At 14/1 in her debut race she was not fancied to win. She didn't, and I couldn't see any reason why she was the favourite this evening, other than she was expected to come on for the run. I had strong information about the Mark Johnston horse Baron's Court and at 11/2 and better I felt that price offered much better value. It's satisfying when you oppose the favourite and see it overturned (Georgie The Fourth was third), but when you also back the winner, it is more than doubly satisfying.

Over 11 points profit to stash away come the end of play.

Tuesday horse racing summary

I missed posting yesterday, so let me quickly recap Monday's results. Not how I prefer to start the week, I took something of a hit to the account and ended the day 7 points down. This was due largely to laying Dave's Dream at Folkestone for seven points. I re-couped 2 points by laying Nike Walker, but my two losing win bets meant I still had to accept a 7 point dent in the bottom line.

Today made no difference as my win bet lost, as did my lay bet to get that lost point back. Town And Gown was competing in a maiden race over 6f at Southwell this afternoon. She was still a maiden after five starts, and I was happy to put money up at 13/8 or lower to suggest she would fail again. She was backed in to just odds-on at the start, which is very skinny about a horse without winning form. She will doubtless win a race in turn, but I would want much better odds to be tempted to back her, and today she finished third.

Sunday horse racing summary and weekly results

I was looking only at the all-weather meeting this afternoon at Wolverhampton, and my only proposed selection did not reach my advised price, and so nothing to report today.

And so a 'day-off' to finish what has been a fantastic week for my Win Bets. I bettered a 50% strike rate with 8 winners from 14 bets, including Distant Sun on Thursday at 14/1 and a total of 27 points profit.

The Lay Bet account had a relatively quiet week, scored three successful bets from four, but ended up showing a small loss.

Profits for the week:

Win Bets 27 pts , Lay Bets 0.5 pt loss

We're living in a Boomtown

A most pleasing day's punting, returning just over 5 points profit. I had five back-to-win bets, which produced three winners, and a further two placed horses. Boomtown is a horse currently enjoying some improvement in form, and the handicapper felt he was worthy of his highest ever mark for his narrow defeat last time out just three days ago. This afternoon he was running at Lingfield, and offered at 15/8 to win this morning. This price instantly stuck out as good value, and indeed his price shortened all day until he was sent off at 11/10F He made all in the race to win, and there could still be more to come.

Friday, January 18, 2008

Friday horse racing summary

Of my two lay bet selections, one was a non-runner and the other was priced too high to take the risk of laying him. Which left me with two back-to-win bets - and they both won. Morbick won at the end of the afternoon at Wolverhampton. Warmly backed in from 7/2 the horse was eventually sent off the 5/4 favourite. My second selection was Dodaa running in a class 7 sprint over 5f at Kempton. He had won a similar race 9 days earlier and I thought the early price of 10/3 was good value for a repeat performance. He scooted clear in the final furlong to win with a little in hand.

A fraction under 7 points profit for the day.

Distant Sun shines for me

The blessed rain continues to play havoc on the racing program, and so I concentrated on the all-weather meeting at Wolverhampton. I could see no value opportunities to lay horses, but I did spot just the one win bet - Distant Sun in a 6f handicap. Sitting on a mark of 74 for three consecutive races it was just a matter of when Distant Sun would win at this level. The fact that his trainer had travelled a long distance to Wolverhampton to race just the one horse was an extremely positive sign, and the clincher for me. He was the first to hit the finish line at a tasty price of 14/1 with 16/1 freely available on the exchanges.

Wednesday horse racing summary

A useful couple of points profit to add to the bottom line this afternoon. The win bets didn't fare too well, with one short-priced winner from three bets.

However, I successfully layed two fancied horses for a total of 3 points. With no wins to his name, Banoge was the strong favourite to win the novice hurdle at Newcastle. Today he was also stepping up in class, which made the tag of favourite even more bewildering. I layed him for 2 points at 11/4 and punters continued to lump on until the price had dropped to 5/4 at the off. He finished fourth and 16 lengths behind the winner. I followed this up by laying Doris's Gift in the handicap chase later on in the afternoo.

Overall I made a profit of just over 2 points.

Do NOT subscribe to any horse racing tipster service without reading this

This piece starts with an email I received not too long ago from a new member to my racing advice service. In the mail the new lady member informed me how she had fallen victim to one of the oldest tipster scams around. Unfortunately this type of con is all too commonplace, and in this case made a victim of a lady with little knowledge of betting. What is more concerning, is that for the con-artists to continue using these methods means there must be a never-ending supply of unwary people forming a queue to be exploited.

I write this article hoping I might at least make a few people aware of what to look out for.

The story starts with the typical piece of junk mail which regularly gets posted through our letterbox. It contains incredible promises of huge profits to be gained from following this guy's betting advice. As 'proof' of this guy's expertise there is a page of simply brilliant results, of dozens of horses winning at big prices.

Now admittedly, I myself guarantee a significant income to members of my betting service. However, what I do offer any potential member is the opportunity to try my service first hand, with a free trial. This tipster was looking for the initial month's membership fee up front, sent to an anonymous PO Box.

So, my first piece of advice would be "never send a tipster any money, until you are satisfied of his credentials." Ask for a trial period with his service before you agree to send any money. If he replies with a 'no' then you have not lost anything.

More often than not, you will find no way of getting hold of the tipster to put this question to him -- no email address, no telephone number, only the anonymous PO Box address. This strange wish to remain incommunicado should also tell you a lot about him!

Returning to the story of our friendly neighbourhood tipster and his glossy piece of marketing copy -- after sending off a cheque for a not insignificant amount of money, the lady in question received a 'newsline' telephone number, and it was suggested she call the number every day for the tips. I know what you are probably thinking, but in this case it did not turn out to be a premium rate number that costs goodness only knows how much to call each day. This is an often used trick, and everyone should be very much aware of the high costs involved when calling telephone numbers pre-fixed '090' especially if they have already paid a membership fee.

After following the tips for a week or so, the results were only poor to average, and certainly nowhere near those advertised by the convincing marketing literature.

The next piece of advice may be a cliche, but is still holds true -- "if it seems too good to be true, then it most probably is!"

After about a week, this lady received another letter, telling her that if she wanted to hear about a 'sure-fire winner' in Australia's Melbourne Cup, then she needed to call another number.

When she called she spoke to a man who explained that for her to receive details of the horse, she must first agree to place some money on it, on behalf of the tipster. His lame excuse was that because he had been so successful with his betting in the past, all the bookmakers had closed his accounts, and he now finds it difficult to place bets himself.

The lady was asked to put £200 on for this tipster, and in addition whatever she could afford to wager herself. The horse in question, if we were to be taken in by the hype from this tipster, "categorically could not lose".

She placed her money with her high street bookmaker, and I suspect you are well ahead of me and can guess exactly what happened. In fact, she lost £300 in total.

Two things to bring to your attention here -- firstly, the tipster takes absolutely zero risk in this transaction. If the horse fails to win, then it is just you that loses money. If it happens to win, then you will be forced into mailing the con-man his share of the profits. Secondly, as if you didn't know, there is no such thing as a 'sure thing' in any race. Even more so in such a high profile race as the Melbourne Cup -- its the biggest race of the year in Australian horse racing, and each and every one of the horses will have been entered with a chance of winning.

This kind of scam is even less believable nowadays. What with the betting exchanges, the situation where various bookmakers have closed your accounts is now completely irrelevant. Companies such as Betfair have no concern that you are a winning customer, and they will never shut down your account.

Whenever you are shown a set of 'incredible' results from a tipster, the first thing you should do is ask if these results include ALL the selections given. In other words, try and find out if the tipster trying to hide any losers which would subtract from his results? The previous lesson also applies here: can you easily contact the tipster, and how quickly and positively does he give his response?

If the results are actually complete, then we can analyse them a bit further: note down the total number of bets. This is the total we would have laid out. By way of an example let's say that there are 100 bets -- you would have placed 100 points in bets.

Let's say that when you add up all the claimed winners, the returns add up to 203 points. So, you would have invested 100 points in 100 bets, which returned 203 points to make a profit of 103 points. Outstanding profits indeed!

But now let's take a reality check! 103 points profit on an investment of 100 points gives us a return on investment of 203% This is calculated by dividing the 203 points returned, by the 100 points originally invested.

If you were to ask any professional punter, they will suggest a good return is 120% -- very good is 130% -- and anything over 140% is at best unsustainable, and at worst an outright fabrication. Myself, I give myself a pat on the back when I achieve over 130% ROI for any particular month, and more likely I will only achieve around 120% - 125%

To summarize,

1. Be wary of any service that asks you to call a premium rate number for your selections. You should be aware that you will be spending over £100 every month on telephone calls BEFORE you have even started to make any profit.

2. Do not be fooled by someone who suggests they have a 'dead-cert' winner that cannot lose. Every horse, in every race has some chance of coming first, and so you will never find a horse 100% certain to win.

3. Never be afraid to question a tipsters results -- never take them at face value.

4. Do not send a tipster any of your money until he has proven himself to you over a period of time, or he has been recommended to you personally by a trustworthy person.

5. Be cautious of any tipster who hides behind an anonymous PO Box number, or proves awkward to contact. Does he reply to your questions promptly and credibly?

6. If it seems too good to be true, then it most surely is.

7. Never allow yourself to be persuaded to place a bet on behalf of a tipster. His excuse that he cannot place bets personally does not hold water when we can now take advantage of betting exchanges, and only means he is hoping you will take all the risk in placing his bets.

8. Is the tipsters claimed Return On Investment realistic -- you would be wise to suspect anything over 150%, which you will probably find is an exaggeration.

With the meeting at Folkestone eventually called off, and a couple of non-runners at the remaining meetings, I ended up with just the one bet. I backed Granary Girl at Kempton but without success. And so a solitary point lost from the account.

The Betfair Income Generator

My message today concerns one of the hottest most talked-about products on all the betting forums last summer.

If you are short of time you can jump straight to the web site to see what this post is all about:

Betfair Income Generator

I was asked to promote this product shortly after I returned from holiday last September. The reason I have left it several months to tell you about it is that I wanted to thoroughly review how it works in reality, and to verify the income claims on the web site.

The author was a little taken aback by my seemingly laid-back approach, thinking I might miss out in some way if I didn’t tell my readers about his eBook straight away. But he soon realized that I only promote a new product to my valued readers once I am happy myself it does what it says on the tin.

The Betfair Income Generator (The BIG) is a little off-topic for me, as it is not primarily a horse racing product. Rather it concerns Betfair Gaming, and reveals a method to generate a reliable and consistent income, playing the Betfair Games web site.

One thing to point out from the top is that this system will not suit anybody looking to make a fast buck. If your spare time is extremely limited then you may as well stop reading right now.

The method described in The BIG can be quite time-consuming to make a significant income, but because Betfair Games operates 24/7 you can easily work this part-time to suit yourself. I found I was playing whenever I had an hour to spare, and I was able to see returns of up to £40 per hour on a regular basis.

I will not sugar-coat this; if you are familiar with playing Poker to earn a living, you know you must put in the hours to grind out a decent income. But it still beats working for a living by a long chalk!

But its also a flexible system you can easily schedule around your existing commitments.

I think The BIG will appeal largely to those of you who are based at home, or punters who wish to supplement their betting activities with a reliable and consistent income stream.

Or perhaps you are looking for a temporary second income after the expenses of Christmas, and to make a dent in those credit card bills? Then look no further than The BIG.

The BIG also comes with a money-back guarantee which always gives me that extra bit of re-assurance to buy with confidence.

Head on over to the web site for more information:

Monday horse racing summary

An indifferent set of results today, with a small profit from the Win bets but a loss to the Lay bet account. I had two win bets, and found one winner available on the exchanges at 2/1

I chose to oppose Working Title in the class 4 novices hurdle at Fakenham this afternoon. This was to be only his second race, following a win in a class 6 NH Flat race. Apart from the step up in class, today he would be jumping obstacles for the first time in public, so I was happy to lay him for 3 points if I could get matched at 13/8 I struck my bet at 6/4 and watched the race unfold. I couldn't have got it much more wrong, and the horse beat the well-fancied favourite by 25 lengths. I lost four and a half points profit this time, but I was still happy with my motives for laying the horse. I grabbed a point back later, again at Fakenham, by laying Pasagai.

By the end of the afternoon the account as a whole was down by the best part of 3 points.

Sunday horse racing summary and weekly results

Before I go on to detail the results from the past week, let me just summarize the weekend racing. On Friday I had 5 win bets and returned 2 winners, including High Five at Kelso about which we got a tasty 6/1 on Betfair. I had 4 lay bets. Three of these lost to give me 6 points profit, which I duly gave back when The Polomoche won its race. So just over 5 points profit for the day.

Yesterday saw nil returns from 3 win bets, but I came out slightly in front after successfully laying Arnold layne for 4 points at Warwick. However, a crashing fall was not the way I would have wished the horse to lose the race, and let's hope Tony McCoy is not sidelined by his injuries for so long he misses Cheltenham.

Today I managed to pick out two runners-up, which alas do not contribute to our tally. My lay bet was Dushstorm at Kempton, and although it lost it was never available at my value price and so goes down as a 'no bet'. A 2 point loss for the day.

And so on to the week's results: I managed 7 winners from 27 Back-To-Win bets, and 10 points profit. I successfully layed bets against 9 race favourites from 13 attempts, and produced just under 8 points profit.

Profits for the week:

Win Bets 10pts, Lay Bets 7.5pts

Spare Cash puts money in my pocket

I made a small profit overall today, thanks largely to a good result on one of my lay bets. I had three win bets which returned the one winner, but lost out by a half point.

I wanted to be against Spare Cash in the novice hurdle at Hereford. Yet again we had a horse being backed in to odd-on prices without any winning form. In a sixteen runner race he could not possibly justify the 4/7 price tag. Its little wonder most bookmakers holiday in Barbados, whilst punters lose money, if the backers are prepared to follow the herd and accept these prices. Spare Cash finished runner up by 3 lengths and brought me just over 8 points profit.

At the end of the afternoon I finished just ahead by one and a half point.

Wednesday horse racing summary

A poor preformance from the Win bets this afternoon, with all four selections going down. But I managed to get a few points back by successfully opposing the odds-on favourite Fushe Jo at Musselburgh. This was only his third race over hurdles and still without a win under this code. His last outing was a class 5 maiden hurdle, and today he was stepping up in class. I was also unsure how he would cope with soft going. Yet the horse was sent off as the 4/6F an unbelievably short price about a horse who has yet to show the form to win this kind of race. He patently did not relish the sticky going and came in third. The odds-on price also meant I could increase my stake slightly without prohibitive liability.

A dent of one and a half points in the account overall.

Autumn leaves them all behind

A bumper day today with over 13 points profit to take home. I started the afternoon with three winners from three races. Autumn Charm had won a Seller at this level only last month, and followed that win with a race in which she wasn't disgraced, at a higher level. Back down to Claiming class again I saw 11/4 as a good value price for another win. With the money going on the favourite the price on our horse eased out to 5/1 on the exchanges. I was rewarded when my selection overturned the favourite to win.

I had just the one lay bet in morning favourite Coleorton Dancer, which duly lost to give me a bonus point.

December Results
December returned a healthy overall profit to round off a successful and record-breaking year. But the credit this month goes entirely to the back-to-win bets which produced profits topping the 40 point mark. The lay-to-lose bets got off to a disastrous start, taking a 17 point blow on the chin on one day. But the account steadily recovered to break even by the end of the month.

Interview with John McCririck
Over the festive period I came across the web site for Inside Poker magazine. Obviously the site is mostly concerned with everything Poker, but it does have a section dedicated to betting on horse racing. Here I stumbled across a series of interviews entitled ThePlayers which I found a most interesting read. I've featured the racing "Marmite" figure John McCririck (you either love him or hate him - personally I think he's great) but there are several others in the series, including Mick Channon, Ruby Walsh, and Frankie Dettori.

The Betfair Income Generator
The Betfair Income Generator (B.I.G.) is a little off-topic as it is based upon making a consistent income from Betfair Gaming. But I am happy to show people this product because I have been using it regularly since I returned from holidays in the summer, and the method has proven very consistent.

If you have absolutely no spare time then this product will probably not be suitable, as it is quite time-consuming if you wish to create a significant income. And I will not 'sugar-coat' this - just like playing poker, you will have to put the hours in to grind out a steady income. However, because Betfair Gaming operates 24/7 you can easily work this part-time around your job if necessary. I found I could generate between thirty and forty pounds per hour, putting in a little time here, and some more time there.

I think this product will appeal most to people already based at home, or punters looking for a steady and reliable income stream to supplement their betting activities.

Monday horse racing results

A mixed bag of results this afternoon, which left me around half a point out of pocket when all is said and done. Gentle John was my only winner from four back-to-win bets, but at the exchange price of 9/2 was good value and ensured I made a profit overall. Gentle John had a class 4 event within him, but needed just a little improvement on his performance last Spring to get there. After a couple of fair runs in a higher class during December he was dropped back today, and I felt 9/2 would be a worthwhile price to pay.

I went against three horses at Taunton, and notably for a big 7 points against Group Captain. That particular gamble didn't pay off, but I recouped some of the deficit by successfully overturning Spring Dream, and The Wooden Spoon for 4 points.

You could easily argue we would have been much better off not taking part this afternoon, but I say "Where's the fun (and potential profit) in that approach?"

Sunday horse racing summary and weekly results

It's been a very quiet week end. What with yesterday's technical shenanigans putting the kybosh on all bets, I only had one bet today, and that lost.

The Win Bet account showed a reasonable start to the new year, with 6 winners from 20 bets returning just over 7 points profit. There were much fewer opportunities on the Lay Bet account, and we only had two bets. These were both successful however, and produced 6 points profit between them.

Profit for the week:

Win Bets 7 points, Lay Bets 6 points

Ghosts In The Machine

Apparently gremlins struck last night, and played havoc with the computer systems. Consequently my selections today could not be broadcast, which is a shame because all ten of them won!! (joke)

I've been told that unfortunately the service could be off air until Monday - so I will catch up with everybody then. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Friday horse racing summary

Another good day with two winning bets from four. Haroldini had made a recent return to form when winning in a similar race at Southwell. He clearly enjoys this track after a series of disappointing runs at Wolverhampton. Before his latest win, the last time he went close was again at Southwell. So I was happy to put my money behind the horse here at a decent price, and I was looking for at least 7/2. I managed to secure 4/1 on the exchanges, and he scooted home by 2 lengths.

A little under 5 points profit to put in the bag.

Thursday horse racing summary

A good return from both accounts today, and three winning bets from four. Art Man and Hucking Hero won their respective races, and Mighty Matters was a warm favourite successfully overturned.

Mighty Matters was competing in a class 3 handicap chase at Fontwell. He had never won at this level, and was up 11lbs since his last win. To win this afternoon would require a career-best performance and I felt 11/4 would be a good value price to start laying bets against him. During live betting he was available at 5/2 before easing out to 11/4 and I went against him for 3 points. He was pulled up.

A fraction under 6 points profit to bring home overall.

Three Ships adrift

A small loss of a point to the account overall today. My win bets had another poor showing, with a further four losing bets. But I was able to re-coup three points with a successful lay bet.

Three Ships was running in a handicap hurdle at Folkestone. Following a win in a class 5 event, this afternoon he was stepping up in class and shouldering an extra 7lbs. For these reasons I thought he was a value bet to lay at 13/8 or below. During live betting he was backed in to 6/4 before easing out to 7/4F and I layed bets for 3 points. From a prominent position he faded to third towards the end of the race.

A loss of a single point at the end of the day.

It's just not Cricket

A Happy New Year to everybody! Well, not a particularly auspicious start to the year, with four bets from four going down. I had received good word from the Pipe yard that Cricket Boy had come on well for his debut run earlier last month. This afternoon he was contesting another 'bumper' at Cheltenham. Today's race represented a big step up in class, but I felt he justified a price of 9/2 or better. I managed to get matched at 5/1 before he was sent off the 7/2 favourite. He could only finish third and just over a length behind the winner.

Both my nominated lay bets lost, but their respective prices were not low enough, and so they both go down as 'no bets'.
